ISO 14001:2015 Requirements And Internal Audit

Introduction

Internal audits are pre-requisite of ISO 14001:2015. However, auditing to barely meeting compliance is not a healthy activity. Audits should be value added and focus on continual improvement of the Environmental Management System. Audit findings by major certification bodies have revealed that internal audits are indeed an area of weakness in the implemented Environmental Management System of most organizations. In fact, most international and national certification bodies are in the process of reducing surveillance audits if reliance can be placed on the effectiveness of internal audits. Therefore, internal audits should be enhanced so that weaknesses and opportunities for improvement can be identified and actions can be taken to correct the weaknesses or harvest the benefit.
